5 Tips for Taking Care of Your Porcelain Veneers

Looking to brighten up your smile? Consider porcelain veneers, which last between 10 and 15 years if taken care of properly.

At Barganier and LeCroy, DMD, we want to do all that we can to enable you to have a smile that you can show off, so we’ve come up with a list of five essential tips for for taking care of your porcelain veneers.

#1 Practice Proper Oral Care

Caring for your veneers is similar to caring for your other teeth; therefore, the best thing you can do is brush them at least two times every day, remembering to floss at least once per day.

Why is this so important when your new porcelain teeth can’t decay? The teeth that your veneer is attached to will have some exposed areas that will still be susceptible to tooth decay. Therefore, brushing is important, since good oral hygiene will prolong the lifespan of your veneers and help keep your entire mouth healthy.

Along with daily flossing and brushing, make sure you visit your dentist every six months. A regular dental check-up will keep your mouth healthy and make your dentist aware of any issues that may be affecting your veneers. Just because your smile looks great doesn’t mean you get to skip your check-ups!

#2 Use a Soft Toothbrush

Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid damaging the polish on your veneers. You should also use a non-abrasive toothpaste. Barganier and LeCroy, DMD, can help you with toothpaste selection if you have any questions.

#3 Avoid Foods, Drinks, and Activities That Can Stain Teeth

The porcelain used to create your veneers is resistant to staining. However, the adhesive that bonds the veneers to your teeth can become stained, causing the area around the edge of the veneer to appear yellow or darkened.

Some of the main culprits in tooth staining are wine, sodas, coffee, and smoking. If you are drinking a beverage that may cause staining, then we recommend using a straw to help keep the liquid off of your new pearly whites.

#4 Avoid Hard Objects

Chewing on hard objects can cause you to chip your veneers. Remember, the material is porcelain, which is not as strong as your actual teeth. Therefore, avoid chewing on ice, hard candies, and other things that could quickly cause damage.

If you are eating an apple or similar type of food, cut it up into bite size pieces. These small steps can keep your veneers in great shape for many years to come!

#5 Don’t Grind Your Teeth

Grinding your teeth can damage your natural teeth, as well as your veneers, and should be stopped immediately. I know that may be easier said than done, especially if you mainly grind your teeth in your sleep. If you have a problem with grinding or clenching your teeth, Barganier and LeCroy, DMD, can help provide a solution for protecting your teeth during the night from grinding.
