December is here, the air is colder, decorations light up the sky, and the smell of delicious baked goods filled our homes as we become filled with the holiday spirit. It doesn’t matter what holiday you are celebrating, you will without a doubt be tempted by a cookie or two – and you deserve it! Treat yourself!
But – before you get too carried away, it is important to note that sugar is one of the worst things your teeth can come in contact with, so indulge with caution. Here are some tips to make sure you make it through December, and the holiday parties, without a mouth full of cavities!
#1: Drink Water
Drinking water helps produce saliva, which works to actively restore the pH balance of your mouth. Additionally, drinking water rinses your mouth of bigger leftover food particles that would otherwise stay stuck in your teeth. By drinking more water through the holiday season, you can help keep your mouth protected from unhealthy bacterias that cause cavities!
(Remember, try to avoid acidic drinks if you can!)
#2: Brush After Eating
It may be wise to carry a toothbrush and toothpaste around with you. During the holiday season, desserts pop up anywhere and everywhere. They are brought to schools, work, sporting events, neighborhood gatherings, and much more. The best way to make sure you are protecting your healthy teeth is to brush soon after eating. Plus, brushing will both clean your mouth and curb your cravings for seconds!
#3: Indulge in Health, Too
So, you can’t turn down a cupcake – that’s pretty human. Instead of beating yourself up for giving into temptation, try to make a few healthy snack choices in addition to your desserts!
(Stress can be bad for teeth, too!)
As you mingle around your holiday parties, stick near the veggie tray if you know you can’t resist dessert. Vegetables like celery and carrots are actually thought of as “nature’s toothbrush” and can help to clean your teeth in between bites!
#4: Open Packages Safely
Keeping your teeth healthy during the holidays isn’t just about keeping your teeth clean, it is also about using your teeth correctly. You see, every single holiday season, dozens of people end up with “tooth” emergencies because they tried to open a bottle or package with their teeth, instead of a bottle opener or scissors. It may sound silly, but it happens more than you think. This year, remember, going to get the scissors in another room is easier (and a lot less painful) than loosing a tooth altogether!
Annual Dentist Appointment = Healthy Teeth
Another important way to maintain healthy teeth through the holidays is make it to your annual dentist appointment. Are you due for yours? Schedule an appointment with Barganier & Lecroy DMD today, and have a happy holiday!
